Up for sale is a remarkably rare and highly collectible antique brass pocket aide-memoire (miniature notebook), cleverly styled to resemble a small hardback book.
The front cover is decorated with an eye-catching, raised circular medallion showcasing a detailed red enameled “Lucky Pig.” Most importantly, this piece survives complete with its original, ultra-rare miniature wooden pencil, which slides securely into the integrated side spine loop to act as both a writing instrument and a clasp to keep the book closed.
In the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, pigs were widely cherished novelty tokens of wealth, good fortune, and prosperity. This pocket accessory features its original top suspension loop, allowing it to be securely attached to a pocket watch chain, chatelaine, or fob ribbon.
Condition – This item is in great antique condition with a wonderful aged patina and authentic character. The enamel on the pig medallion remains vibrant and intact. The side hinges are sturdy and function properly. The rare original wood pencil shows signs of age and sharpening but fits perfectly into the spine sleeve. The internal notepad pages are present. Typical minor surface oxidation and wear to the brass finish as clearly shown in the photos.
Please inspect all high-resolution photos carefully as they form the primary description of the item’s physical condition.
Historical Background
During the turn of the 20th century, an aide-memoire (French for “memory aid”) was an essential pocket accessory. They allowed Edwardian ladies and gentlemen to quickly jot down dance partners, shopping lists, or daily appointments. The inclusion of a pig emblem aligns perfectly with the “Lucky Pig” (Glücksschwein) trend that dominated European and American novelty art between 1890 and 1914. Because the tiny pencils doubled as the lock mechanism for the case, finding one with the pencil still intact is a major plus for collectors.
