Product Overview: For sale is a highly scarce, authentic Victorian 1st City of Edinburgh Artillery Volunteers Cap Badge dating from the late 19th century. This premium piece of Scottish military insignia is heavily die-stamped in solid gilding metal / bronze-toned alloy. The design showcases the iconic Edinburgh Castle shield flanked by intricate “EAC” monograms, beautifully topped with a crisp Victorian Queen’s Crown. Historical Context : The 1st City of Edinburgh Artillery Volunteers were formed in 1859 amidst a growing British movement to establish localized citizen volunteer corps to defend against potential foreign invasions. Based out of the historic capital of Scotland, this elite volunteer unit trained rigorously in coastal defence gunnery and heavy garrison artillery tactics.The badge proudly displays the coat of arms of the City of Edinburgh, famously representing Edinburgh Castle sitting high upon its volcanic rock plug. Because Victorian artillery volunteer units were tightly localized and significantly smaller than regular line infantry regiments, their insignia was produced in very limited numbers. Surviving examples retaining their original factory reverse paint and fixing pins are incredibly rare and highly sought after by Scottish heritage and artillery historians globally.
