The Oldest Line Regiment in the British Army
Raised in 1633 by Sir John Hepburn under a Royal Warrant from King Charles I, the regiment holds the legendary distinction of being the First Regiment of Foot. Due to its immense age and seniority, it was affectionately known throughout the British military as “Pontius Pilate’s Bodyguard.” The regiment served with distinction across the globe for over 370 years before being amalgamated into the Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006.
