Up for sale is an authentic, original British military cap badge for The Essex Regiment. This striking insignia features a highly detailed bi-metal design combining a central brass castle and an oak leaf wreath with a white metal Sphinx resting on an “Egypt” tablet at the top. The lower edge is wrapped in a matching white metal three-part scroll reading “The Essex Regt”.
The reverse side features the original, long vertical brass slider attachment, which remains structurally intact, strong, and unbent. This beautiful badge is an excellent piece of infantry history, perfect for dedicated militaria collectors, badge frames, or ancestry displays.

Item History
The Essex Regiment was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that saw extensive service across both World Wars. This iconic badge design honors two historic battle honors won by the regiment’s predecessors: the Sphinx represents service in the Egyptian Campaign of 1801 (won by the 44th Foot), while the Castle and Key represent the heroic actions during the Great Siege of Gibraltar from 1779 to 1783 (won by the 56th Foot). This bi-metal pattern was worn proudly by Essex troops from the late Victorian era up through 1958.
