The beautifully struck Scottish design showcases a stylized cluster of three full thistle buds rising from a dense background of detailed thistle leaves. The central oval garter band is cleanly stamped 1 BATTALION MIDLOTHIAN V.R. surrounding the raised brass numerals 32. The base features a sweeping scroll carrying the classic Scottish royal motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET. The reverse side completely preserves its antique loop fittings with two wire lugs securely attached across the center. Item History
The 1st Midlothian Rifle Volunteers were formed in 1859 in Leith during the Victorian volunteer movement triggered by perceived invasion threats from France. The numeral 32 represents the designated precedence rank of the county of Midlothian within the United Kingdom’s Volunteer Force framework. This early pattern badge layout with a distinct motto scroll was proudly worn on headgear like shakos or glengarry bonnets before the battalion transitioned to become part of the Royal Scots in 1888.
