Description
Up for auction or purchase is an incredibly rare, historically fascinating piece of 1930s British social and sporting history—an original event programme from the Woodford Ox-Roasting held on Saturday, 16th July 1932. This unique community gathering took place at Hinton by kind permission of C. Douglas, Esq.
The cover prominently bills a full schedule of Athletic and Boxing Events. The interior opens to reveal a complete, pristine “Programme of Sports.” This section details the Inter-Schools Athletic Festival competing for the “Graham Norris” Cup and the “Durban Cup.”
It lists the specific local competing schools, their uniform colors, and their entry numbers (including Hinton District C.E., Woodford-cum-Membris C.E., Brackley Council, and Daventry Abbey). The right-hand page maps out the exact heat times, athlete entry numbers, and names for events such as the Boys & Girls Hurdles, and the Junior Boys & Girls 60 Yards Heats starting at 2:00 p.m. This is an exceptional, detailed piece of ephemera for collectors of vintage British school sports history, regional events, or Northamptonshire local heritage.
Condition
- Pre-owned Status: Very good vintage condition for a fragile paper item over 90 years old.
- Paper Quality: Has a lovely, uniform golden-brown age patina with soft, slightly rounded corners.
- Binding & Edges: The center crease remains fully intact and strong. There are no loose pages or completely split bindings.
- Text & Contrast: As shown in the photos, the internal typography remains completely sharp, clean, and highly legible with no ink annotations, modern pencil marks, or heavy liquid staining.
Item History
The village of Woodford Halse and its surrounding hamlets like Hinton have a rich heritage of holding traditional festivals, with historic Ox-Roasting galas dating back generations. During the interwar period of the 1930s, these festivals served as massive community fund-raisers, drawing crowds from neighboring towns to witness spirited athletic races and localized amateur boxing tournaments. Because these low-cost, 3-pence paper booklets were heavily handled on the day of the event and easily discarded, finding surviving copies intact nearly a century later is exceptionally uncommon.
