This is an authentic, beautifully preserved British military cap badge for the 7th (The Robin Hood) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment. The intricate design features a Maltese cross surrounded by a detailed laurel wreath, surmounted by the King’s Crown. The arms of the cross prominently display the battle honors “South Africa 1900-02”, commemorating the unit’s volunteer service in the Boer War. The central circlet reads “The Robin Hoods” and frames a traditional stringed bugle. The reverse features its original long vertical slider attachment, which is strong and firmly secured. Item History
The Robin Hood Rifles were a famous volunteer unit based in Nottingham with history dating back to 1859. During the Second Boer War, members volunteered for active duty in South Africa, earning the highly prized battle honor “South Africa 1900-02” shown on this badge. In 1908, under the Haldane Reforms, they officially became the 7th (Robin Hood) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. This unit went on to fight with immense bravery on the Western Front during World War I, most notably at the Battle of the Hohenzollern Redoubt in 1915.
