Description
This is an authentic, guaranteed genuine World War I period British Army cap badge for the 5th (Cumberland) Battalion, Border Regiment. This highly collectible territorial battalion badge features a Maltese cross superposed on an eight-pointed star, topped with the King’s Crown. The central roundel proudly displays “5th” surrounded by the battle honor “SOUTH AFRICA 1901-02”. The lower scrolls bear the inscription “BORDER REGIMENT CUMBERLAND”. Stamped from white metal, the reverse features a prominent green painted or lacquered backing historically applied by the soldier or unit, along with two original copper loop attachments.

Item History
The 5th (Cumberland) Battalion was a Territorial Force battalion of the Border Regiment. They uniquely retained their specific South African War battle honor (“South Africa 1901-02”) directly on their cap badges to commemorate their volunteer service during the Boer War. During the First World War, the 5th Battalion mobilized for active service on the Western Front, earning a legendary reputation for bravery in France and Flanders. Genuine Great War specimens with original lugs and distinct reverse characteristics are a prized centerpiece for any serious Border Regiment or Territorial Force collection.
