The 1st King’s Dragoon Guards originally adopted the double-headed eagle emblem in 1896 to honor the Emperor of Austria, Franz Joseph I, who was appointed their Colonel-in-Chief. While suspended during WWI for political reasons, this specific variant without a lower text banner was reintroduced in 1938 and worn throughout World War II and the post-war era up until 1959.
