Original 1958 / 1959 Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Programme – The Black Arrow
Up for sale is a superb piece of mid-century British theatrical history. This original official vintage programme documents the winter holiday run of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure tale, The Black Arrow, staged from Boxing Day 1958 to mid-January 1959.
This booklet holds extraordinary collectible appeal due to its star-studded cast early in their respective careers. Most notably, the cast features a young William Roache (credited as William Roache playing both ‘Sir Daniel Brackley’ and ‘Lord Shoreby’) just a year before he landed his historic, record-breaking role as Ken Barlow on Coronation Street. Additionally, the production stars legendary British actor Ian Holm (credited as ‘Assistant Stage Manager’ and performing onstage), alongside acclaimed actors Robert Lang and Elizabeth Shepherd.
The interior pages showcase wonderful late 1950s local advertising blocks, including features for Player’s Cigarettes, Co-operative House on Upper Parliament Street, The Moulin Rouge Restaurant, A.K. Austin Ltd Garage, and a classic ad for local mid-century espresso bars “el toreador and the Sargasso” on Burton Street. The back cover carries a bold advertisement for Associated Television (ATV).
