Dating from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, bird claw sugar tongs became an incredibly popular novelty flatware design during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They were used extensively in traditional British households to safely grip and serve irregular sugar loaf cubes during formal afternoon tea services.
