You are purchasing vintage & original opera programme. This is a rare opera programme for a production of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (The Barber of Seville) performed at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples during the 1944–45 season.

This programme is a artifact from a unique period in the history of the San Carlo, which is the oldest continuously active opera house in the world. 

Following the liberation of Naples in October 1943, the theatre was requisitioned by British Military Authorities.

A British officer, Peter Francis, organized repairs to the bomb-damaged building, and performances resumed on December 26, 1943.

During this season, performances were primarily intended for Allied troops, though the local civilian population was eventually admitted to the gallery and loggia.
