Original 1960 Theatre Royal Bristol Programme – The Woodcarver
Up for sale is a superb piece of post-war British theatrical memorabilia. This original official programme captures the world-famous Bristol Old Vic Company performing Morris Brown’s play, The Woodcarver, during its three-week run starting Tuesday, 5th April 1960.
This particular booklet holds immense collectible value as it features a very early career stage appearance by legendary comedic actor Leonard Rossiter (playing Griff, a writer of begging letters), alongside acclaimed actor John Standing (playing Paul, a poet). Incredibly, the production was directed by a young Prunella Scales, decades before her iconic role in Fawlty Towers.
The interior pages are heavily detailed with a full cast index, act layouts, production team credits, and a dedicated page previewing the upcoming production of Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer.
The booklet is filled with outstanding 1960 regional advertisements, including prominent spots for Bristol Tipped Cigarettes, Frost & Reed Galleries on Clare Street, Bristol Handicrafts, Tavern Export Ale, Bristol Wireless Ltd portable radios, and André Bernard hair stylists.
