Description
Up for sale is a genuine vintage British military infantry cap badge representing the elite 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles). This distinct and beautifully detailed insignia features the traditional Prince of Wales’s feathers emerging from an elegant royal coronet frame.
A sweeping ornamental banner scroll underlines the plumes, bearing the iconic royal motto “Ich Dien” (I Serve). Strikingly struck from solid brass and treated with a dark, non-reflective field coating, this piece is uniquely notable as the only Gurkha regiment insignia that does not feature traditional crossed khukuri knives. A premier addition for any specialist rifle regiment collection or British military insignia display.
Condition
  • Overall Condition: Good Vintage / Field-Used Condition.
  • Metalwork: Retains its dark blackened protective layer on the reverse side with minor expected surface rubbing along the back edges from historical cap placement.
  • Structure: The hollow die-stamped details remain fully robust, uncrushed, and stable.
  • Fastening: The integrated vertical rear slider bracket is original, completely intact, straight, and rigidly secure to the main body frame.
Item History
The 2nd King Edward VII’s Own Gurkha Rifles was a highly celebrated rifle regiment of the British Indian Army before transferring directly into the British Army in 1948. First raised in 1815 as the Sirmoor Battalion, the unit earned a legendary fighting reputation at the Siege of Delhi in 1857 and across both World Wars. They were awarded the unique privilege of wearing the Prince of Wales’s plumes as their primary insignia device in 1876. To fit their combat role as tactical light infantry skirmishers, their brass cap badges were traditionally chemically blackened or darkened in the factory to eliminate battlefield glint and reflection while serving on the front lines.
