Issued in the United Kingdom by Godfrey Phillips Ltd. for B.D.V. Cigarettes, these delicate textile inserts were packed inside cigarette boxes in the early 20th century. History of the Item
Issued in 1912 during the Edwardian era, tobacco companies packed these silk inserts into cigarette packets to build brand loyalty. They were especially popular with women, who collected and sewed them into decorative pillows and table runners. This specific image is a miniature reproduction of a famous Renaissance masterwork depicting a musical angel strumming a lute, attributed during the era to the Bellini family. It allowed everyday consumers of the era to own a pocket-sized version of a museum masterpiece.
