This striking 62cm antique carriage coach lantern beautifully embodies old-world European charm and early transport history. Masterfully constructed from heavy solid brass, the lantern features a classic 6-sided hexagonal geometric shape. Five sides are lined with genuine clear glass window panes, while the rear features a solid polished brass backing designed to maximize light reflection forward.
The rear access panel is uniquely bottom-hinged, allowing it to swing down smoothly when released from its top latch. This dropdown design provides ample room to place a candle, service the internal fuel container, or easily feed wiring if you choose to electrify it. The upper architecture of the frame is embellished with two tiered, open-work decorative crowns that act as traditional ventilation galleries. Towering at the very peak is an imposing, highly detailed classical eagle finial with beautifully spread wings. Dating back to the early-to-mid 20th century, these stately eagle-crested brass lamps were originally styled after the traditional 19th-century Belgian and French coachmen lights. The dropdown door mechanism was an intentional safety feature on historical carriages, ensuring gravity and wind resistance kept the compartment sealed while in motion.
