Historical Context & Collector Notes
This piece stands as a wonderful example of late-19th-century French desk luxury. The “Déposé” mark was used by French manufacturers to protect their artistic designs under patent law.
Before fountain pens or ballpoints became standard, dip pens with steel nibs were used exclusively for writing. Ornate brass inkstands like this “D.L.” model were vital centerpieces of domestic life, placed prominently on writing desks alongside matching stationery racks. The stylized tulips and flowing fan cresting on the back are heavily inspired by the French Art Nouveau movement. The design allowed writers to rest their wet ink pens safely across the front tray without staining their desk’s woodwork.
