Description
This is a highly collectible, genuine antique military cap badge for the 11th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles). Struck in heavy solid brass, the badge features a classic Maltese cross layout. The arms are emblazoned with the unit’s Latin motto “Pro Aris Et Focis” (For Hearth and Home), wrapped around a central circular medallion showing a strung rifle bugle horn. The upper arm displays the Boer War battle honour tablet “South Africa 1900-02”, all cleanly topped by the King’s Crown. Unlike common slider versions, this variant features its original twin copper attachment loops (lugs) on the reverse side. It is a fantastic historical piece for serious British militaria and London Territorial collectors.
Condition
- Overall State: Good antique condition with a rich, dark aged brass patina.
- Front Detail: The lettering, central bugle, crown texture, and tablet markings remain distinct and crisp. The metal shows nice, deep toning across the cross textured fields.
- Reverse Side: Both original copper attachment lugs are securely intact and structurally strong. Authentic light green verdigris oxidization is present around the solder joints and crown area, providing solid evidence of its untouched age.
Item History
The Finsbury Rifles were a celebrated rifle unit of the British Volunteer Force, later becoming the 11th Battalion of the London Regiment upon the creation of the Territorial Force in 1908. Due to their active and vital service in the Second Boer War, they earned the right to display the “South Africa 1900-02” battle honour on their badges. During World War I, the battalion fought with great bravery in the Mediterranean theater, including Gallipoli, Egypt, and Palestine, before moving to the Western Front in 1918.
