Description: Up for sale is a 100% original, pristine antique late-Victorian British Army Other Ranks die-stamped brass Glengarry cap badge to the 40th (the 2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot. This iconic, short-lived pattern was strictly worn between 1873 and 1881 before the regiment was amalgamated under the Cardwell/Childers reforms.
Front Details: Sharp high-relief strike featuring the Egyptian Sphinx over the “EGYPT” honor block, enclosing a voided central number “40” within a belt strap reading “SECOND SOMERSETSHIRE”, all enveloped by traditional laurel sprays.
Rear Fixing Details: As shown in the photos, the reverse features two original copper wire loops (lugs) in a secure north-south vertical alignment. Both loops are structurally complete, strong, and entirely original to the piece with absolutely no modern repairs or resoldering.
Condition: Exceptional antique condition. The badge boasts a highly desirable, untouched deep natural chocolate patina with authentic light green verdigris spots in the deep recesses. Left entirely uncleaned to preserve its historical investment value.
An absolute collector-grade example of pre-1881 line infantry insignia, perfect for premium militaria displays or historical archives.
