This specific volunteer battalion insignia features the eight-pointed star topped by a King’s Crown (KC). The center circle outlines Exeter Castle and specifically designates the “4th V.B.” above the motto scroll reading “SEMPER FIDELIS” (Always Faithful). Item History
The 4th Volunteer Battalion was part of the volunteer forces of the Devonshire Regiment prior to the 1908 Territorial Force reorganizations. Volunteer units like the 4th V.B. were comprised of dedicated local citizens who trained intensely for home defense and supplied vital reinforcement companies during the Boer War and leading into World War I. Because volunteer battalion pieces were issued in much smaller numbers than standard line infantry badges, they are highly sought after by specialized militaria collectors.
