Product History & Significance: This is a guaranteed original, rare bi-metal cap badge for the 13th (Service) Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, fondly known as the “Wandsworth Pals”. Raised in June 1915 by the Mayor and Borough of Wandsworth as part of Kitchener’s New Army recruitment drive, this service battalion mobilized to the Western Front where they saw extensive combat action under the 40th Division.
The badge design is completely distinct from standard line battalions: it replaces the traditional Guildford Castle centerpiece with the custom Wandsworth Borough Arms shield mounted over an eight-pointed star, complete with the battalion’s proud motto scroll reading “WE SERVE”. The battalion was ultimately disbanded in November 1918, making genuine surviving examples of this badge highly sought after by Great War insignia collectors.
