Historical Background
The Royal Army Ordnance Corps was the massive logistical and supply backbone of the British Army, responsible for handling weapons, ammunition, armored vehicles, and stores.
This specific badge represents an incredibly short chapter of post-WWII history. In March 1947, the corps introduced a new cap badge that replaced their standard title name with their proud Latin motto: Sua Tonanti Tela. Derived from the ancient Roman poet Manilius, it translates to “To the Thunderer His Weapons”.
Because this intricate three-scroll layout proved difficult to read on parade grounds and too wide for the newly introduced berets, the War Office Dress Committee ordered its replacement just two years later in November 1949. This tight production window makes the Sua Tonanti Tela King’s Crown variant highly prized by advanced insignia catalogers. Finding an example with its original east-west copper wire loops intact rather than post-war slider tabs adds immense collector appeal.
