Historical Background
The South Wales Borderers are globally famous for their legendary, heroic defense of Rorke’s Drift during the Zulu War in 1879, where the regiment won seven Victoria Crosses.
This specific badge represents a vital chapter of the First World War. In 1916, as the British Army grew rapidly to supply the trenches of the Western Front, the War Office implemented strict metal conservation measures. Regiments that traditionally wore multi-part, two-tone “bi-metal” badges had their designs simplified. Manufacturers struck the entire pattern out of a single sheet of gilding metal/brass to save time and resource material.
Because these “all-brass economy” versions were only manufactured for a brief window before reverting back to bi-metal after the war, they are highly sought after by specialized WWI historians. Finding an economy variant preserved with its traditional early-pattern east-west wire lugs (loops) rather than standard post-war slider tabs makes this a exceptionally rare collector’s piece.
