These delicate fabric inserts were packed inside cigarette packets in the early 20th century. Condition NotesPre-owned / Antique Collectible. This 110+ year old tobacco silk is in excellent antique condition. The printed artwork remains very sharp with vibrant colors and minimal fading [GPJ]. The edges show minor raw fraying, which is completely standard for factory-cut premium silks of this era [GPJ]. There are no major fabric tears, permanent stains, or deep creases. Please review the high-resolution photo carefully to evaluate the exact edge and surface condition before bidding.History of the ItemIssued in 1912 during the Edwardian era, tobacco companies packed these silk inserts into cigarette packets to build brand loyalty [BDM]. They were especially popular with women, who collected and sewed them into decorative pillows, table runners, and quilts. This specific image is a high-art reproduction of Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s famous oil painting, “A Child with an Apple” (c. 1757–1760), which resides in the National Gallery in London [NG1]. It allowed regular everyday consumers of the era to own a pocket-sized version of a museum masterpiece.
