This specific style of badge was introduced following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It was worn on the peaked uniforms of prison officers across the UK.
This chrome, circular pattern remained in official service for 35 years until late 1988, when HM Prison Service underwent uniform modernization and replaced it with an eight-pointed star design. This change rendered the older circular crown badges officially obsolete, making them a highly sought-after piece for police, prison, and militaria collectors.
