Item description
You are purchasing very collectable & original antique theatre programme. For sale is a fascinating piece of late-Victorian theatrical history: an original opening night theatre programme from the Shaftesbury Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, London, dated Wednesday, May 21st, 1890.
The playbill features the premiere of “Judah,” an original play of modern English life in three acts written by Henry Arthur Jones. The production was staged under the personal direction of Mr. E.S. Willard, who also stars in the title role. The programme details the full cast list, act overviews, scene locations, and musical selections for the evening.
A brilliant crossover piece for collectors of Victorian ephemera, theatre history, or antique advertising, as the layout features wonderfully illustrated period ads for Tottenham Lager Beer, Bryant & May’s Matches, Bovril, Electric Lighting installations, and more.
