Detailed Description- Design: It depicts the “Sachsenross” (Saxon Steed), a white horse prancing toward the right (heraldically “passant”) on a red shield. This horse is a traditional symbol of the Hanover and Lower Saxony regions.
Construction: This is a “Bevo” style badge, which means it is machine-woven on a flat loom rather than embroidered. This method was common for mass-produced patches in the late 1940s and 1950s.
History: After 1945, the British Army divided its zone of occupation into districts. Troops stationed in the Hanover District wore this patch on both shoulders of their battledress uniforms to identify their command.
Condition: Your specific example shows “salty” characteristics—meaning it has fraying around the edges consistent with being removed from a uniform. This authenticity is often valued by military collectors.
