Up for sale is an authentic, original British military cap badge for the 2nd Dragoon Guards (The Queen’s Bays). This distinctive design features the regiment’s gothic “BAYS” title central to a laurel wreath, surmounted by the Queen’s Crown (St Edward’s Crown).
Up for sale is an authentic, original British military cap badge for the 2nd Dragoon Guards (The Queen’s Bays). This distinctive design features the regiment’s gothic “BAYS” title central to a laurel wreath, surmounted by the Queen’s Crown (St Edward’s Crown).
This example was struck in traditional all-brass / gilding metal during the early 1950s transition period before the British military shifted entirely to anodised aluminium (“Staybrite”) insignia. It features the famous, crisp maker’s mark “J.R. GAUNT LONDON” stamped down the reverse brass slider tab. Measuring 42mm x 38mm, it remains in its original, uncleaned condition.

- Overall Status – Very Good Vintage Condition.
- Front Details – Struck brass face shows crisp leaf clusters and clear lettering. Displays a beautiful, untouched dark patina with natural age-related toning in the recesses.
- Reverse and Stamp – Exhibits natural age toning. The manufacturer hallmark on the slider remains perfectly legible and boldly struck.
- Slider – Original mounting slider on the back is completely intact, straight, and firmly attached.
History
First raised in 1685, the 2nd Dragoon Guards earned their famous nickname, “The Queen’s Bays,” because they were historically mounted exclusively on bay-colored horses.
This specific variant captures a brief window of military history. Following the ascension of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, regimental insignia was redesigned to feature the Queen’s Crown. The Queen’s Bays wore this specific brass insignia for only a few short years until April 1959, when the regiment was amalgamated with the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards to form the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards. Marked pieces by elite London manufacturer J.R. Gaunt from this brief 1950s era are highly sought after by post-war British cavalry specialists.
