Historical Background
The Army Veterinary Corps was originally formed in 1903, but received its “Royal” prefix from King George V in 1918 to honor its monumental efforts caring for millions of horses, mules, and camels during the First World War. Upon gaining the Royal title, the corps adopted a new badge deeply rooted in Greek mythology.
They chose the centaur Chiron, who was celebrated in legends as the father of medicine and a master of animal healing. This specific variant features the Queen’s Crown, meaning it was introduced after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and remained the standard pattern worn by the corps throughout the second half of the 20th century.
