This listing is for an authentic British Army 23rd Battalion London Regiment Staybrite cap badge. It features a striking bi-colour anodised finish with a silver-tone eight-pointed star overlaying a gold-tone circle. The center displays a detailed castle motif, surrounded by the battle honour “South Africa 1900-2”. A banner sweeps across the bottom bearing the text “The 23rd London Regt”. The reverse features an original, solid slider attachment distinctly stamped with the respected military manufacturer mark “J.R. GAUNT B’HAM”. Item History
The 23rd (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment was an auxiliary territorial unit originally formed in 1908, tracing its volunteer roots back to 1859. The “South Africa 1900-2” battle honour displayed on the badge commemorates the unit’s vital service during the Second Boer War. This specific version features the Queen’s Crown and was produced post-1953 using modern anodised aluminium, widely known among collectors as Staybrite due to its resistance to tarnishing. The reverse mark denotes production by J.R. Gaunt & Son at their primary factory in Birmingham during the mid-to-late 20th century, making it an excellent example of mid-century British military manufacturing.
