Description
This is an authentic, incredibly rare vintage black-and-white promotional press photograph from 1961 featuring British television icons Ian Hendry and Patrick Macnee. The dramatic scene captures a tense moment with a vintage telephone. The reverse side of the photo features an official ink authentication stamp from regional press photographer W. Dennett of Guildford, alongside a pencil inscription identifying actor Basil Moss. Because the vast majority of 1961 episodes from both The Avengers Season 1 and Emergency-Ward 10 are permanently lost, surviving physical promotional relics like this are highly prized historical broadcasting artifacts.
Condition
- Overall Rating: Vintage – Very Good Used Condition
- Front: High clarity, strong glossy retention, and rich contrast with only minor handling marks.
- Back: Clean, legible photographer’s ink stamp and light pencil inscription.
- Edges: Light softening at the corners and minor age-related curling consistent with a 60+ year old media print. No heavy stains, tears, or ink marks damage the main image.
Item History
- Origin: Shot on set or during a press junket in 1961 by regional photographer W. Dennett for ABC Television / ATV promotion.
- Background: 1961 was a pivotal year in British television history. It marked the debut season of The Avengers—initially starring Ian Hendry as Dr. David Keel before Patrick Macnee’s John Steed took over as the sole lead. At the exact same time, Basil Moss was rising to fame as Keith Adam in the massive hit medical soap Emergency-Ward 10. This rare photo captures an incredible moment at the dawn of these classic television careers.
