History of the Insignia
The rank of Airman First Class was established as part of the structural independence of the United States Air Force following World War II. During the Vietnam War era and continuing into the early 1990s, the Air Force utilized these distinct “subdued” insignia formats for field environments.
By replacing the bright, high-visibility white-and-blue dress uniform chevrons with this specialized dark blue on olive-drab green threading, personnel maintained operational camouflage under field conditions. These specific horizontal dimension variations (100mm wide) were commonly issued as the standard-size chevrons for utility fatigue clothing before the military’s eventual transition to multi-terrain camouflage patterns.
