Historical Background:
The 2nd Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment was originally raised as the 76th Regiment of Foot by the East India Company. The proud honor of the “Hindoostan” title and the elephant emblem were granted by the Crown to commemorate the regiment’s extraordinary service in India between 1788 and 1806, notably under General Lake. This explicit 2nd Battalion insignia is a highly prized variant among collectors of the West Riding Regiment and early campaign militaria.
