History of the Insignia
The 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot was one of the most celebrated light infantry units in the history of the British Army, playing a decisive role under Sir John Moore in the Peninsular War and striking the final blow against Napoleon’s Imperial Guard at the Battle of Waterloo.
The bugle horn insignia stands as the universal symbol of British light infantry, used historically to signal tactical field movements over long distances instead of the traditional line infantry drum. This specific badge features the dual copper lug reverse setup, which was the standard military issue style for Victorian-era Glengarry caps worn between 1874 and 1881 before the Childers Reforms merged the unit into the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Finding a Victorian specimen complete with its original copper feet and fitting pin makes this a premier piece of early ancestral regimental history.
