Description
Up for sale is a genuine, large vintage Victorian to World War I era British military insignia representing the Gloucestershire Regiment. This highly detailed, oversized brass piece displays the iconic regimental Sphinx sitting facing left atop a decorative tablet inscribed with the “EGYPT” battle honour.
The Sphinx is flanked by a sweeping laurel wreath that ties together with a central ribbon bow. Arching across the entire bottom base is a large, flowing title scroll cleanly embossed with the regiment’s name “GLOUCESTERSHIRE”. Struck from thick, heavy die-stamped brass, this larger variant features a twin wire loop lug configuration on the reverse side spaced 45mm apart. It is a fantastic, premium addition for any collector of British line infantry insignia or specialist regimental history.

- Metalwork: Displays a beautifully aged, dark unpolished patina on the reverse side, showing authentic tarnishing and honest wear within the deep hollow recesses.
- Structure: The heavy stamped details remain completely intact, exceptionally clear, and robust with no crushing to the hollow backing profile.
- Fastening: Both original reverse copper wire fixing loops are securely attached and strong. It comes with a loose, long brass-colored retaining wire cotter pin passed through the loops.
Item History
The Gloucestershire Regiment, affectionately known as “The Glosters”, is one of the most famous regiments in the British Army. They hold the unique tradition of wearing two badges on their headdress—one on the front and a smaller Sphinx on the back—earned for their heroic “back-to-back” stand at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. While their cap badges were much smaller, this large-scale 90mm wide variant was utilized as a dress pouch badge or valise decoration for equipment. This pattern was officially authorized in 1881 during the late Victorian period and saw continuous use by the regiment well into the Great War.
