Item Description – Up for sale is a genuine British military white metal forage cap badge for the Volunteer Artillery units, dating from the late Victorian era to the early 1900s.
The front features a crisp, hollow-back flaming grenade design showcasing exactly 17 detailed, exploding flames rising from a smooth, unadorned round bomb base.
The reverse side confirms its excellent collectible condition, featuring its two original copper wire fixing loops (lugs) fully intact, unbent, and solid in a vertical layout with a 19 mm spacing. The badge stands exactly 40 mm tall by 28 mm wide. It features a great natural vintage patina and has been left uncleaned. Please see all photos to view the exact physical condition. Item History – This distinctive 17-flame white metal badge was worn by Other Ranks of the Volunteer Artillery on their pillbox and peaked forage caps prior to the 1908 Territorial reforms.
While line regiments wore brass, volunteer units uniquely utilized white metal. The twin vertical loops allowed the badge to pin firmly and sit flush against the stiff wool headdress worn by volunteer gunners during this historic era.
