Up for sale is a rare, historically significant piece of post-nationalisation British transport ephemera. This is an authentic internal loose-leaf manual issued in January 1962 by the British Transport Commission (Commercial Department).
Clearly marked on the cover as “(Private and not for publication)” British Railway Cartage Hand-Book January 1960 Paperback …, this booklet was explicitly compiled for British Railways commercial representatives. It served as a private operational handbook for staff pitching, organizing, and managing commercial Freight and Passenger Train Facilities across the network just prior to the major restructuring era of the 1960s.
