Item Description
This unique vintage heavy solid brass trinket dish features an ornate, highly detailed baroque style scrolled pattern base. The central handle is designed in the likeness of the famous mythical Lincoln Imp. Perfect for use as a finger chamberstick style ring holder, coin tray, or vanity catchall dish.
The reverse side features three integral scrolling feet for stable tabletop display and a central screw mechanism securing the handle.
Condition
Used. Good vintage condition. The bright polished brass elements stand out beautifully against the textured, recessed cream-colored wash highlighting the pattern. The underside shows a rich, dark unpolished natural age tarnish. No cracks or loose parts.
History
The central character is the Lincoln Imp, a famous stone grotesque figure from folklore found inside Lincoln Cathedral in England. According to 14th-century legend, the devil sent imps to cause trouble, and this particular imp was turned to stone by an angel. Brass souvenir pieces featuring the Lincoln Imp became highly popular in the UK from the 1920s through the mid-20th century.
