Up for sale is an authentic, original British home front military cap badge for the City of London Volunteer Corps. This beautifully struck badge features the central heraldic elements of the City of London Coat of Arms, depicting two detailed winged dragons clutching a central shield emblazoned with a dagger.
Up for sale is an authentic, original British home front military cap badge for the City of London Volunteer Corps. This beautifully struck badge features the central heraldic elements of the City of London Coat of Arms, depicting two detailed winged dragons clutching a central shield emblazoned with a dagger.
The layout features two lower banners. The upper banner reads the city motto “DOMINE DIRIGE NOS” (Lord, Guide Us). The lower distinct banner displays the full unit title: “CITY OF LONDON VOLUNTEER CORPS”. Measuring 34mm tall by 47mm wide, this piece is made of traditional solid brass/gilding metal and features its original early-style dual fixing loops on the reverse.

History
Formed during the opening months of World War I, the City of London Volunteer Corps was part of the broader Volunteer Training Corps (VTC) movement. The VTC was a recognized home defence military organization composed of men who were either above military age, working in vital exempted occupations, or waiting to be officially called up to regular frontline service.
Commonly referred to as the “Home Guard of the First World War,” these volunteer battalions drilled regularly and guarded critical local infrastructure across London, including railways, bridges, and utilities. Because these early home front corps were eventually integrated into standard county regiments later in the war, original surviving 1914-1918 badges bearing the distinct “Volunteer Corps” scroll remain highly collectible tokens of London’s wartime home defense heritage.
