Description
This is an authentic, highly collectible World War I British home front military cap badge for the Exeter Volunteer Regiment. Beautifully struck in crisp white metal, the badge design features a distinct pair of crossed rifles. The lower section integrates their iconic sweeping scroll banner bearing the historic Latin motto “Pro Aris Et Focis” (For Hearth and Home). The reverse features its correct, original solid brass long vertical slider mounting arm. As a dedicated local home guard and volunteer training corps unit from Devon, these badges are far less common than standard line infantry badges, making it a stellar addition to any advanced Great War militaria collection.

- Front Detail: The rifle stocks, barrels, and alignment remain cleanly defined and entirely unrubbed. The stamped scroll text lettering is remarkably crisp, and the white metal retains a lovely aged patina.
- Reverse Side: The long brass slider is strong, straight, original, and firmly attached. Authentic dark toning and minor light green verdigris are present on the back hollows, confirming its untouched antique age.
Item History
The Exeter Volunteer Regiment was raised during the early years of World War I as part of the Volunteer Training Corps (VTC). These units were composed of men who were either over the age for front-line military service, or in medically exempt/essential occupations. They stood ready to defend the British home front against potential invasion, guarded local infrastructure, and provided vital military drill training. Because the VTC units were disbanded shortly after the 1918 Armistice, this badge is a guaranteed, short-lived artifact of the Great War home front.
