Up for sale is an authentic, original World War I cap badge for the Liverpool Pals (17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th Service Battalions of the King’s Liverpool Regiment). This iconic badge features the traditional “Eagle and Child” crest resting above a ducal crown and the “Sans Changer” motto scroll. The reverse side is equipped with a vertical mounting slider stamped with the prestigious maker’s mark: “J.R. GAUNT LONDON”. Historical Context
The Liverpool Pals battalions were formed in August 1914 by the 17th Earl of Derby. They were the very first of the famous “Pals” battalions raised during Kitchener’s Army recruitment drive, allowing friends, coworkers, and neighbors to enlist and serve together. While these service regiments were originally slated to wear the standard King’s Liverpool Regiment insignia, King George V authorized them to wear Lord Derby’s personal family crest as a distinct honor.
The maker, J.R. Gaunt & Son, was one of the most prolific and highly regarded military insignia manufacturers in the United Kingdom. Established in Birmingham and later opening major offices in London, Gaunt produced thousands of high-quality badges during World War I. Collectors specifically look for the “J.R.
