Item Description
Up for sale is an authentic, original British Army World War I era brass cap badge representing the Scottish Horse Yeomanry Regiment. This die-stamped insignia displays a prominent central St. Andrew’s Cross (Saltire) flanked by a protective wreath of juniper and bay leaves, topped with a Queen’s Imperial Crown. The front features a central oval scroll reading “Scottish Horse 1900” and a bottom battle honour banner detailing “South Africa 1900 1901 1902”. The reverse side features its original dual copper fixing lugs and the distinct maker stamp plate reading J.R. GAUNT LONDON.
History & Era Context
The Scottish Horse was a celebrated Yeomanry regiment of the British Army’s Territorial Army, originally raised in 1900 by the Marquess of Tullibardine for active service in the Second Boer War. This particular badge style dates to the World War I (WW1) era, during which the regiment saw heavy combat on the Western Front, Gallipoli, and Salonica. The bottom banners proudly commemorate the campaign honours won by the regiment’s very first mountain infantry drafts during the South African conflict.

- Front: Excellent vintage condition. The brass body shows a clean, beautiful age-darkened patina with very crisp lettering inside the scrolls.
- Reverse: The reverse side shows standard historical toning. Both copper fixing lugs are fully solid, original, and intact with no modern repairs. The J.R. Gaunt maker mark remains perfectly legible.
