Item Description
Up for sale is a vintage First World War Tyneside Scottish cap or glengarry badge. This insignia represents the historic Tyneside Scottish brigade, which included the 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers. These units were famously raised as part of Lord Kitchener’s Pals army.
The front features a crisp, die-stamped castle tower topped by a lion holding a flag, resting on a St. Andrew’s cross flanked by Scottish thistles. A lower scroll reads TYNESIDE SCOTTISH.
The back shows a correct hollow-back stamping. It features two original copper or brass wire loops firmly attached behind the thistles. This is an excellent addition to any WW1 British military insignia collection or North East England regional history display.

Historical Background
The Tyneside Scottish was raised in Newcastle upon Tyne in late 1914 to accommodate the massive influx of local volunteers of Scottish descent. As part of the Northumberland Fusiliers, these battalions trained together and went to France as a cohesive unit. The brigade suffered devastating, historic casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916, while advancing near La Boisselle. This specific second pattern badge design uniquely merges Newcastle castle iconography with traditional Scottish saltires and thistles.
