Item History
First raised in Ireland in 1693, the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars was a celebrated light cavalry regiment of the British Army. The iconic winged harp symbol reflects their historic Irish roots. During World War II, the regiment fought with immense distinction as part of the famous 7th Armoured Division (“The Desert Rats”), participating in grueling tank battles across North Africa (including El Alamein) before landing in Normandy on D-Day and fighting through into Germany. They were eventually amalgamated in 1958 to form the Queen’s Royal Irish Hussars.
