Up for sale is an authentic, original British Army cap badge for the Manchester Regiment, featuring the striking and historic Fleur-de-lis design. This solid brass insignia was officially adopted by the regiment in 1923, replacing their older armorial style, and was proudly worn throughout the Second World War era. The reverse side features a completely intact vertical mounting slider with no repairs. Historical Background
The Manchester Regiment originally wore a complex badge featuring the City of Manchester’s coat of arms, which soldiers colloquially and dismissively nicknamed the “tram conductor’s badge.” In 1923, the regiment formally shifted to this beautifully simple, elegant Fleur-de-lis insignia.
The choice of the symbol traces its origins back to the 63rd (West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot—which later amalgamated into the Manchester Regiment. The 63rd Foot won the right to use the French lily symbol as a battle honor following their historic actions against French forces at the capture of Guadeloupe in 1759. This specific all-brass variant was used continuously until 1948, when the regiment transitioned to a white metal version.
