• Establishment of the OBE (1917): King George V founded the Order of the British Empire in 1917 to acknowledge outstanding civilian and non-combat war contributions during WWI. The dedicated Military Division was quickly introduced in December 1918 to specifically recognize distinguished service among operational officers.
• The 1914–15 Star (1918): This bronze campaign star was authorized in 1918 to reward personnel who saw active service in any frontier theatre of war against the Central Powers between August 5, 1914, and December 31, 1915.
• The Rise of Sew-On Bars: During the Great War, steel pin frames were scarce, uncomfortable under heavy field equipment, and expensive. Tailors began mounting silk ribbons directly onto narrow strips of buckram fabric, allowing soldiers to stitch the insignia lightweight and completely flat directly over the breast pocket of their service dress tunics.
