Description
Up for sale is a genuine World War I era British military bi-metal cap badge representing the South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers). This detailed, collectable Great War insignia showcases a multi-tiered historical layout, consisting of the Prince of Wales’s plumes and “Ich Dien” scroll over a beautifully centered Sphinx mounted atop an “Egypt” campaign honour tablet.
The main imagery is enclosed within a sweeping laurel wreath bordered by “South Lancashire” across the top banner and “Prince of Wales’s Vols” along the baseline ribbon. Strikingly constructed from a combination of golden-toned gilding metal and crisp white-metal overlays, this piece comes complete with its original vertical sliding tongue bracket on the reverse side for traditional cap attachment. A perfect addition for any WWI militaria collector or British regimental history enthusiast.
Condition
- Overall Condition: Good Vintage / Used Condition with noted attachment wear.
- Metalwork: Displays a natural, aged patina with authentic verdigris (green oxide oxidation) build-up on the reverse recesses, consistent with genuine military storage, aging, and handling.
- Structure: Details remain remarkably sharp, uncrushed, and highly legible.
- Attachment: The rear slider tongue is fully intact and firmly attached with its original brazed factory fixing, but it is physically bent/curved from historical wear.
- Note: Please examine the high-resolution listing photographs carefully to review the exact condition, rear construction, and the bend in the slider before committing to a purchase.
Item History
The South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers) was a distinguished line infantry unit of the British Army that operated under this title from 1881 until its amalgamation in 1958. The distinctive “Egypt” sphinx emblem seen at the heart of the design was proudly granted to symbolize their predecessor unit’s heroic actions during the Egyptian Campaign against Napoleon’s forces at the start of the 19th century. This specific bi-metal variation featuring the long-slider configuration was widely distributed to infantrymen to wear on their service dress caps throughout the First World War.
